Want vs. Need

Last night, I sat down to dinner with my husband. Well, let me rephrase that, I made a healthy Quinoa salad with grilled garlic shrimp and sat down beside him while he ate. The reason I was a spectator to my own meal: I could not for the life of me figure out what I felt like eating. I know I wanted “something”,  I just didn’t know what that something was! My husband (smart man that he is) looked at me and said…

  • “It may not be what you WANT to eat or even FEEL LIKE eating – but what does your body NEED?”

And he was right! 90% of the time I open my refrigerator door and ask myself….”Hmmmmm, what do I want?”. I don’t really ever ask myself

“WHAT DO I NEED!?”

Well, last night the answer for what I needed was protein! So although I did not feel like eating shrimp and quinoa, that is what I ate. For my body. Not for my tongue! The sad truth of it is, if we all ate what we felt like eating  we would all be clothes shopping at plus sized stores! Our bodies are machines and we have to feed them the right type of fuel for them to work properly.

  • Your body definitely NEEDS fruit more than it NEEDS ice cream or a chocolate bar.

Continuously eating foods that are processed, filled with trans-fats, or are high in sugar is like putting sand in your gas tank every-time you fill up. Your car is not going to run well for long if you keep it up!

TRY IT!

Next time you’re standing in front of the open fridge deciding what to have, instead of asking yourself what you want or  feel like, just ask yourself:

What do I need ?

Chances are eating what you actually need will help curb the bad craving you’re having!
