  • After making what they thought was the right dessert choice, have you ever heard of  someone complaining that they felt gassy or bloated after the slice of watermelon? Or saying that fruit gives them bad acid reflux? This could merely mean they have eaten the fruit in the wrong sequence as opposed to fruit simply not agreeing with them.
  • There is a theory out there, some believe it- others do not. It’s that fruit should be eaten alone, on an empty stomach. I’m a firm believer in this principle simply because of the way my body reacts to fruit. If I have fruit after a meal, I get bloated and uncomfortable. I know when someone offers me fruit for dessert they are simply looking out for me- But in truth, after a big meal, that fruit is just going to sit on-top of my meal in my stomach and ferment - causing me gas and bloating.

  • Fruit is actually very easy for your body to digest. In fact, if eaten on an empty stomach you can digest it within 30 minutes! ( Other foods take hours to leave your stomach!) Imagine that if you had chicken with corn, salad and bread for dinner. That type of meal will take hours for your stomach to work through. Then, 20 minutes after you’ve eaten din din,  you have a bowl of fruit! Something that would normally only take 20 or 30 minutes to pass through your stomach is now going to sit on-top of your dinner while your dinner digests. By the time your small intestine is ready to grab nutrients and energy from the fruit, the fruit has fermented.

  • I absolutely love fruit and think it’s a very important part of daily nutrition so here is what I do: every morning I wake up to a fresh plate of fruit! I cut up my standard: 1 kiwi, 1/2 a grapefruit, 1/2 an apple and then whenever berries are in season. I eat this before my morning coffee, I wait about 30 minutes before I brew my cup. Now this is just a personal preference, but I really feel like it’s a great wake up for my metabolism in the morning. I digest it quickly and  because no other food is interfering with it, my body has the ability to get all the vitamins, nutrients and energy it can. Not to mention I find fresh fruit on an empty stomach very cleansing  (it’s great for my morning trip to the bathroom).
