Every diet stresses the importance of lean protein to lose weight. Some even promise weight loss with ANY type of protein (lean or not) as long as that’s all you eat! Although I do not agree with diets that focus solely on protein and allow you to eat mounds and mounds of high fat foods, I do agree with the theory that eating lean protein is great for weight loss.

  1. 1. Protein does not spike your insulin when you eat it. This will actually hep to curb your appetite.
*When your insulin levels spike (from high carbohydrates foods), they then drop rapidly leaving you with a feeling of being hungry.

  1. 2. Off all the macro-nutrients (Protein, Carbohydrate, Fat) your body works the hardest to digest protein – burning more calories.

Your bodies preferred energy source is actually Carbohydrates. Along with a bunch of other things, proteins primary job in your body is muscle and tissue repair. Now – if you don’t have ample carbohydrates to use as fuel your body will begin to burn it’s own fat for fuel. This means your body will have gone into it’s fat stores to look for energy – when your body resorts to stored fat for energy….YOU LOSE FAT!!!

Your body can convert protein into fuel- however, it is a last resort as it’s hard work !
  1. 3. You don’t crave protein. Well, most of us don’t- not the way we crave things like chips, chocolate and bread. You have a little bread, the sugar gets in your system and you want more of it. This does not happen with chicken breasts and tuna!
  1. 4. Your body will store extra carbohydrates and fats and hold onto them for a rainy day ( if that day never comes…the pot belly does!). Your body does not store protein.

This week try switching your high carbohydrate snacks with high protein ones!
1. Cheese strings are great because they are portioned out for you.
2. As well, yogurt is great for this same reason.
3. Celery and peanut butter.
4. Hard boiled egg. I like to replace the yolk with humus.
5. 1 ounce serving of unsalted nuts.

    Great post today!

I agree – when I eat lots of protein I do feel full for longer… but after a meal made mostly of protein and little or no carbs, I still always feel like I “want/need” something else… like I’m not totally satisfied.

If I can struggle past those feelings, it works out in the end and I can stay full.

    Thanks!!

The great thing about a protein meal is that it doesn’t leave you bloated. Probably the feeling your missing
;-0 Something we have to get used to for sure! We are so used to knowing that we are full when we have to open our belts a notch!
Stick with it! It gets easier and you’ll get more accustom to the ‘non feeling”. In fact, if you tough it out, you WILL start to feel satisfied AND you wont feel bloated.
Keep me posted on how it”s going!

So far I am hanging in. I am eating mostly protein and I do find that I am losing weight and not feeling hungry but I am still struggling a bit with wanting that “something extra” at the end of the meal. But I’ve cut out evening snacks, limiting myself to 3 meals plus snack around 3-4pm. So it’s working and I am staying full… just gotta keep away from all those yummy tasting carbs.

Also, I am going out for dinner tonight at someone’s house so I have no control over what is going to be served… so I am stressing a little. I will try to have some cheese before I leave the house and hope that keeps me full long enough to avoid any potential mishaps. With my luck she will serve pasta!!

That’s great. The cravings will stop. And soon you’ll forget muffins existed :-0
At times like those I say…enjoy. Eat what is served..BUT make sure to watch you portions. Dish out your own plate and have small portions of everything. So if it’s pasta, before you head out your door tonight measure out 3/4 of a cup of pasta in a measuring cup and take a good look at the size of it. This way, you’ll know how much you can eat when you go to your friends house. And of course, don’t forget to fill up on anything green she serves!
Feel free too to add another snack into your day! I always have a snack before lunch. I think staying full is the key to avoiding those delicious carbs :-)
