The Benefits of Grapefruit

One of my favorite things to eat for breakfast is a grapefruit. I just find it so thirst quenching first thing in the morning. I personally think eating fruit first thing is a great way to wake up your digestive system after a nights sleep. Fruit is actually considered to be predigested, so when eaten on an empty stomach your body can process and digest it in less than 20 minutes! It can also help with your morning trip to the bathroom

Hi Jessica, I have been reading your blog for a couple of weeks now and love it. About grapefruits, I have heard that grapefruits can be dangerous if you are taking certain medications. Most recently I have heard that it can interact with oral contraceptives and can increase your changes of blood clots. Can you touch on who should maybe avoid grapefruit?
Hi Amanda
Thanks so much for the great feedback! It’s tough for me to answer this question because I think each individual is different and everyone reacts to things in different ways. However, there has been research that addresses both of your concerns and studies have shown that in certain situations grapefruit can interact with medications as well as your blood. Your best best is to ALWAYS talk with your doctor about any concerns you may have. That said, I eat a grapefruit every morning and it has never interfered with any medications I take.
Hope that helps!
