Did you ever notice that whenever you start a workout, the first 5 minutes always seem to be the toughest. It’s a struggle to get through the beginning of a workout, but once you’re in the groove ( or past your 5 minute mark) it gets easier to stay motivated and on track.
- It was so interesting for me when I first learned that there is an actual biological reason why the first 5 minutes are generally the toughest. Here it is : Your body needs a bit of time to respond to the work load you are placing on it. It takes about 5 minutes for your brain and your muscles to figure out exactly how much blood and oxygen you will need to support the exercise you are doing. Once your body figures it out, your lungs and heart begin to deliver the right amount of oxygenated blood to your working muscles. So, for the first 5 minutes your muscles aren’t actually getting enough oxygen (and therefore energy), but after about 5 minutes your heart begins to pump more oxygenated blood that gets delivers it to all the right places. Cool, huh?
