I’m sure by now you’ve heard a lot about folate, especially if you’re a woman thinking about having a baby.
Why?
- Folate is necessary for the production and growth of new cells! It’s important to feed your body folate when a baby is growing to help with the baby’s production of DNA and RDA ( the building blocks of new cells). This helps decrease the risks of birth defects and neural tube defects. Doctors recommend you start taking a folate supplement at least three months before you become pregnant ( if you can), while you are carrying and while you are breast-feeding.
Why do we need folate if we are not in the baby making mood?
- Helps prevent the changes in DNA that can lead to certain types of cancers such as breast, colon and pancreatic.
- Helps to prevent anemia ( Anemia is a deficiency in hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is found in our red blood cells. It is what carries the oxygen throughout our bodies and we need oxygen to help our muscles and organs function!)
- New research suggests that folate in your diet can help prevent some of the high risk factors that can initiate stroke and heart disease.
How much folate do we need?
The RDA (recommended daily allowance) for an adult is 400mg / day.
The RDA (recommended daily allowance) for a pregnant or nursing women is 500mg / day.
- When folate is found in foods such as spinach, asparagus, leafy green vegetables, dry beans and peas it is referred to as folate.
- When foods are fortified with folate, such as cereals, breads and even orange juice or it is taken from a supplement, you will see it referred to as folic acid.
