We get so caught up in trying to exercise primarily to burn calories, we forget about all the other benefits that strength training has!
- Strengthens your heart while strengthening your muscles.
- Can lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
- Can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
- Helps to build bone density. (Especially important for women.)
- Recent studies suggest in can lower your risk of alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
- Helps with balance, gait and your center of gravity.
- Makes you stronger and less prone to injury.
- Helps to repair and restore injuries.
- Makes you feel strong and builds confidence.
- Increases the rate at which you metabolize food. The more muscle you have, the harder your body has to work to fuel those muscles- therefore you will burn more calories – even at rest!
We need to build a foundation of muscles so that when we are 35 or 45, 55 or 85 we can screw in light bulbs, open pickle jars, walk up and down stairs when the elevator breaks and continue to be calorie-burning machines.
