Iron

There are so many vitamins and minerals our bodies need in order to function properly. But what role do they really play and how do they effect us in our everyday lives? Case in point; if someone tells me I need more iron, I want to know why. Iron deficiency is common, especially among women.

Iron helps oxygen enter your blood cells so that it may be delivered throughout your body to tissue and working muscles to help them function. Without enough oxygen you can feel tired, weak and put stress on your immune system. Iron plays a major role in your bodies oxygen delivery system.

The daily recommended intake for iron is:
  • Females 19- 50     19mg / day
  • Males     19 -50      8mg / day
  • 51 + both men and women 8 mg /day

Where can you get iron ?
  • Red Meat / Dark Meat Fowl       *Spinach      *Chicken Liver *Raisins
  • Oysters / Clams              *Lentils / Beans      *Cream of Wheat Cereal           *Soy

Many cereals and breads are fortified with iron. Have a look at the nutritional breakdown on the side of the box.  Even Rice Krispies has iron! – snap, crackle and pop your way to a serving of iron (also a great option to get some iron into your little one)!
