After I posted about the Tilapia I found at the Supermarket, I was asked a question about Sodium, so I thought this would be a perfect time to chat about it.

  • Your Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for Sodium is 2400 mg. (aprox. 1 tsp of salt!) What does this mean? An average adult should not have more than 2400 mg of Sodium a day.
  • When you look at a food label you’ll see a percentage value next to Sodium. If it says 10% of your Daily Recommended Intake (DRI) that means 10% of 2400 mg. This particular item would have 240 mg of Sodium.
Why do we limit Sodium?
  • A high Sodium diet encourages your body to retain water. Because of the high water content in your blood, your heart now has to work harder to pump blood throughout your body. In order for blood flow to meet the needs of your organs and muscles, your heart pumps faster: creating high blood pressure- also know as Hypertension. Hypertension puts you at a much higher risk of developing numerous deadly issues with your heart including; strokes, heart attacks and heart failure to name a few.
Why do we need Sodium?
  • Sodium plays a key role in maintaining a  water balance within our nerve impulses and muscles. We excrete excess Sodium through our kidneys with sweat and urine. But for the most part, we get enough natural Sodium from the food we eat.

*Rules to Live by When Reading a Food Label:
  • Less than 5 mg of Sodium per serving is considered Sodium Free
  • 35 mg or less per serving is considered Very Low Sodium
  • 140 mg or less per serving is considered Low Sodium
  • Reduced Sodium must has at least 25 percent less per serving than the reference food.
