Thanks For Nothing

Canadian Thanksgiving is around the corner. You would think this wouldn’t effect me, living in America and all, but I’m Canadian (Go team!) and all my friends are Canadian, so we get two opportunities to celebrate the harvest! The reason I mention this is because big dinners tend to stress me out. I don’t want to over-eat. In fact, if I’m going to cheat, I really would rather have some pizza and ice cream instead of a big turkey dinner. So – this is why I’m stressed. And it’s silly, because turkey is a healthy food! Veggies are healthy. There will be stuff I can eat without feeling like I cheated. And of course, there will be stuff that is not so good for me, like sweet potatoes with candied marshmallows, green bean casserole with fried onions and of course,  dessert! So I’m making a deal with myself to try and not eat food just cause it’s there. If I stick with a small serving of the healthier stuff at dinner, and have just a sliver of dessert, I’m going for pizza this week! Why eat food that I don’t really want, when I know I can have my treat later in the week!

  • I am also going to go in with a PLAN of action. I’m deciding now what I’m going to have,  so that when I get there, all the different options don’t throw me off. I’m PLANNING on  having:

  • One glass of wine.
  • I’m going to  avoid appetizers as Thanksgiving dinner is big enough on its own.
  • I will take a portion of white meat turkey (sans gravy).
  • A small helping of stuffing (which I love).
  • Anything green (beans, Brussels sprouts, salad- you name it)!
  • I’m going to stay away from the mashed potatoes and the various casseroles.

Now this is me- if you love this stuff and it’s your once or twice a year treat, I would say enjoy! But still, go in with a PLAN. Know before you go. With a PLAN, it will be easier to stick with your diet, and you’ll be less likely to eat just cause it’s there. Try theses tips:

  • Fill your plate just once, don’t go back for seconds.
  • Put small servings on your plate and eat slowly so when everyone is going back for seconds, your still enjoying your first serving and you don’t feel left out for having an empty plate.
  • If you can’t decide between Pumpkin and Pecan pie ’cause you love em both, have slivers of each!
  • Don’t deprive yourself, it will just backfire. Have it all. Just have it in MODERATION.
  • Don’t eat what you don’t really really want. Just ’cause it’s there, doesn’t mean you need to eat it. If your not a fan of marshmallow sweet potatoes, there is no need to have the calories. Save it for that sliver of pie your going to have for dessert.
Good luck!
And of course- Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!
