Sinless Snack

What has 22 grams of protein, 0 grams of fat, only 120 calories and tastes rich, decadent and delicious? 0% Greek Style Yogurt!

I never thought I could be one of those people that liked plain yogurt. I mean why eat it plain when it comes in all sorts of delicious flavors? When I was let in on the greek style yogurt secret, I had to at least give it a try.
  • I mean, 22 grams of protein in a yogurt!

Well, this yogurt was like none I had ever seen. It was THICK, CREAMY and RICH!  I put some in a bowl, cut up some fresh berries and tried it. It was like a luxurious treat –  it almost tasted sinful. This is now one of my favorite mid afternoon snacks, especially when strawberries are in season ( I just made myself a bowl). But before I go dive in, I also wanted to mention that because this yogurt is so thick, I actually use it instead of mayo when I make chicken  or tuna salad. I use it when I bake to replace some of the oil or butter in a recipe and I use it in blended fruit shakes or when I make home made frozen yogurt. Yumm. O.k – I go eat now!

I have to check around for that “Greek Style” yogurt. I wonder if you can find it easily in Canada? Is there a brand you could recommend?

The usual yogurt I buy has way less protein – and I find it doesn’t fill me up one bit.

    Now you have me thinking…

I love this too Jessica…and sometimes I drizzle half a teaspoon off organic real maple syrup…just a little bit will do ya!

Greek Style Yogurt is easy to find at any grocery store. In the States I buy a brand called “Fage 0%” . Not sure what brands are available in Canada. But when you find one, let us know! And just like Gina posted (thanks for the suggestion Gina), you can add whatever you want to make it even more delicious. Vanilla extract is a good one too!

I happened to be at a Walmart yesterday that had a dairy aisle and they didn’t have any yogurts like this. I will try a real grocery store.

I stood in the yogurt section like a psycho reading all the labels and found only 2-3 grams of protein per serving. One I think had 6 but that’s nowhere close to your 22 grams.

    I’ll keep searching…

I do think you’ll have better luck at a real grocery store where they have more selection. The yogurt will actually say “Greek Style” on it. I think there is a brand in Canada called The Greek Gods. The other place you can look is at grocery store like Whole Foods. The Greek Gods Non fat has 12 grams of protein per cup. I’ll keep looking for more options!

OK, I went to the grocery store and not really much better luck. They had one called “Balcan” style but it only had 6g of protein and not fat free.

I found 2% plain yogurt and for one little pot it had 9g of protein and it was delish. The problem for me is that since it has fat it’s 2 weight watchers points.

    Ugh!!

  7. Jessica says:

I know, 2 points is a lot, especially if you can have a yogurt that’s 1 point and it tastes like Boston Cream pie! BUT this 2 point yogurt is actually going to fill you up and keep you full. Your 1 point flavored yogurt has artificial sugar in it. The sugar spikes your insulin levels, once they come down you will feel hungry again and you’ll want more, inevitably turning your 1 point snack into a 2, 3 or even 4. Try it once. See if you like it. WW is great! It’s all about portion control. What you have to do within your limitations is make the right healthy choices so that your 22 points keep you full and doesn’t leave you hungry.

The best I found at another store is no fat and 10 g of protein. It’s good. I put a tsp of brown sugar and a few drops of vanilla extract and it was tangy and yummy.

I admit it keeps my fuller than the “artifical crap”.. so I will stick with it for now. It’s a good treat. Also it doesn’t come in individual portions so I have to spoon it out into a bowl so it feels almost like more a decadent treat.

    Thanks for the advice.

No Prob! Is it 10g of protein for a 1/2 cup of a full one? What brand is it?

  10. Anonymous says:

It’s for 175ml (1/2 cup is 125ml). The brand is WESTERN.

Thanks for the info! I’ll pass it along to all the other Canadians out there looking for Greek Yogurt. Try it with some fresh strawberries or even Banana slices! It really makes it feel like a treat!
