I was really lucky when I started strength training. I had an amazing teacher who showed me the what’s and how’s. (My hubby…ahhhhh). Otherwise, you would have found me totally lost, staring blankly at the diagrams on the side of the machines. Not everyone has someone to show them what to do – and how do you start when you don’t know where to begin?  I think that if you know the basics, you can take them anywhere with you. Starting from the bottom up! Here we go:

  • Calf Raises:
Stand on one leg. (Make sure your toes are pointing forward and that your knee is in line with your second and third toe.) Feel free to use the wall for balance. With the leg currently on the ground, lift up onto your tippy toes – as high as you can go. Hold for 2 counts. Bring your heel back down, but do not let it touch the ground. Repeat the movement for 15 repetitions on each leg.

  • Step Ups:
Find a very stable bench or chair.  You want your knee to be at about 90 degrees when you step up onto it. Step up onto the chair/bench with your right leg (pushing through your heel) and step down with your left. Step back up with your right and repeat. Work at your own pace, push through your heels, keep your toes pointed forward at all times and keep your knee over your second and third toe. * Keeping your core activated and tight throughout this exercise will help you with your balance and posture. Finish 10 repetitions on one leg. Repeat with the other leg.

I’ll be back next week with more exercises you can do in the comfort of your own living room.
